Johnny Cash or Mr John R Cash was born in Kingsland, Arkansas on the 26th of February in 1932. One of six children to Ray and Carrie Rivers and nobody could have envisaged such a colourful life. At just 3 years old little Johnny was taken by his father to the Dyess Colony in northeast Arkansas. They moved to take advantage of the Roosevelt farm programme to build a better life for the family. It was on these lands the Cash family farmed a full 20 acres of cotton and other crops and Johnny worked alongside his parents and family.

Music played a huge part in the Cash household and filled everyday life. John came across a variety of musical tastes which were to grow and become influences in his style later on. His mother’s folk songs and hymns to the songs of the fields all ingrained themselves in Johnny’s heart. He drew upon experiences from his early days to give us the classics “Pickin Time” and “Five Feet High and Rising”.

He grew a strong young man and left for Detroit to try and find work, life took a different turn for Johnny and he enlisted in the U.S army and after training shipped out to Germany.

On his return Johnny married Liberto. A new wife in toe Johnny settled down and took a variety of jobs including salesman but the pull of music always felt strong in his life even when trying to break into the business world.

In 1954 that pull proved too much for Cash and he auditioned as a solo artist for Sam Phillips. He started by putting forward the idea of gospel music being recorded but that idea was immediately thrown out. Phillips saw something in Cash though and that summer he was recording his first song with The Tennessee Three.

His first 2 singles failed to chart but his follow up song’s did much better “So Doggone Lonesome” the “Fulsom Prison Blues” and the incredible “I Walk the Line” shot Cash to stardom.

Stories of a wild lifestyle and heavy drinking only added to the mystique and allure of one of the world’s greatest performers. His life spiralled out of control for a while battling addiction the break up of his marriage, he could feel his whole world collapse.

It’s testament to the man how he recovered and won entertainer of the year and male vocalist of the year in 1969. Like him or love him you can’t ignore the enigma that is Johnny Cash
