Joy Division, one of the most talented groups that ever lived and undoubtedly one of the most interesting bands ever. The tragic life story of lead singer Ian Curtis who took his own life was the pinnacle of a bizarre rise to and fall from fame.
Formed in 1976 in Salford the band never really achieved any commercial success but the importance of their first album Unknown Pleasures cannot be under-estimated. It has been cited as the biggest influence in punk-pop era history inspiring The Smiths, The Cure and even Green Day to follow in their footsteps.
The name Joy Division came from the regiment of female soldiers all tall blonde in regulation with Nazi protocol and they were there to serve as pleasure to the soldiers and reproduce hence the nickname Joy Division.
The band themselves although now their importance is known never really achieved success through mainstream following and sales. Many believe them to be ahead of their time but it was the constant airplay by legendary DJ John Peel and the support of Anthony Wilson that helped them gain recognition.
So different to anything that had gone before their dark cavernous sound and their use of synthesised-electronics they pioneered the sound of the post punk era.
Although only ever making two albums, a small amount of music they left and echo that resonated through the industry for much longer. We loved their music Love Will Tear Us Apart, Disorder, She’s Lost Control and Transmission are still classics to this day.
