Otis Ray Redding Jr was the American soul singer/songwriter and record producer, admired worldwide and seen as one of the major figures in soul and rhythm and blues.
Redding was born and raised in Georgia where he left school at the age of 15 to work with The Upsetters (Little Richard's backing band) in order to support his family. This led to him joining The Pinetoppers in 1958 where he toured the South acting as driver and musician, before he launched his solo career in 1964 with his debut album Pain in My Heart.
Amongst other affectionate names from his fans and critics alike, Otis is viewed by many as The King of Soul, and across all genres is considered one of the greatest singers of all time.
His career and time treating us to his unique sound and easy-listening tunes was cut too short like with so many legends when he died in a plane crash in December 1967. His hit (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay became the first posthumous number-one record on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts, and reached number 1 in the UK Albums Chart.
