What has Des Moines, Iowa ever given us? A cultural black hole full of pigs and farms that have made little to no impact upon the music scene since the 1950’s that is until the amazing Slipknot came to be.
A nine piece band that was reduced to 8 after the death of bassist Paul Gray leaving the remaining members, Sid Wilson, Joey Jordison, Chris Fehn, Jim Root, Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan, Mick Thomson and Corey Taylor to play on.
Formed in 1995 several line up changes happened as with all nu metal heavy metal bands it seems, their first demo was released in 1996 Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. This was followed by Slipknot a self titled album then Iowa and Vol.3: (Subliminal Verses) and finally the wonderful All Hope is Gone.
Influences came form the usual suspects Black Sabbath, Kiss, Slayer, Judas Priest, Korn, Metallica and Iron Maiden. The band have one of the biggest cult followings the world over, recognisable by their masks and jumpsuits all carrying the bar code from their first album.
In 2002 they were voted second best nu metal band to Limp Bizkit, how that happened is beyond anybody’s guess to even think Limp Bizkit are close to Slipknot is beyond anybody here at T Shirt Subway.
